9 Steps That Will Teach You How to Succeed In Life
Only one in three Americans are happy with their lives.
It’s easy to get stuck in the same daily routine, and for a lot of people, this can be very discouraging. They don’t know how to succeed in life.
If you’re also feeling stuck in your life, take a look at these nine tips that will help you be successful.
1. Make a Plan
If you have no idea what you want to do with your life or where you want to end up, it can be easy to feel overwhelmed or worthless.
Sit down and make a plan about how to succeed in life, your personal life. This may be something like starting a new career, creating new relationships, planning a year-long trip around the world or even cooking your own homemade meals.
Once you have some kind of direction, you’ll be able to start taking action, and action brings results.
2. Be Committed, Not Motivated
It is hard to be motivated to work toward your goal every day.
Whether your goal is to run your first marathon, get a raise at work, or sew a costume for your daughter’s dance recital, you’re going to lack motivation somewhere along the way.
You don’t want to wake up and go on a run first thing in the morning, you don’t want to stay late at work today, you don’t want to take off all the sequins because you accidentally sewed them on wrong again.
So what do you do when you don’t have any motivation left? Focus on commitment instead.
How committed are you toward your goal? What are you willing to give or to sacrifice for it? If you’re really committed to your goal, you’ll find the strength to keep pushing even if you start to lack motivation.
3. Focus on the Process, Not the Results
Similarly, if you spend all your time focusing on results, you’ll find yourself getting discouraged pretty quickly. Almost any goal is going to take a lot of hard work before you see any results at all. This could be weeks or even months of work.
Instead of focusing on immediate results, think about the things you’re learning and how you can change what you’re currently doing to make it better.
If you keep exploring and improving, you will be able to get through those tough times when you may not be getting the results you want.
4. Stop Thinking Negative Thoughts
If you don’t have the confidence to reach your goal, you never will.
And the first step to building your confidence is to stop believing all the negative thoughts that pop into your head. A lot of thoughts, things like “I can’t do this because…” or “Somebody else could do this way better than me,” will influence the way you view your work.
The good news is for every negative thought, you can have a positive one. Instead, try thinking things like, “Someone else may be able to do this better than me, but I am smart, motivated, and hardworking.”
It is your mind, and you get to decide what thoughts you listen to.
5. Get Rid of Distractions
Whenever we get into a difficult situation, we tend to turn to our preferred distractions because it is easier than facing the problem.
Distractions could be obvious things like TV and social media or even things like cleaning or eating.
Writing up a list of these distractions and promising yourself you won’t do any of them is one of the best ways to start succeeding in life. You’ll find focusing easier without these distractions, and you’ll probably discover a lot of extra time in the day you didn’t realize you were wasting.
6. Don’t Go Easy on Yourself
Sometimes when we get scared or face a particularly tough barrier, our response is to give ourselves some time off. You want to avoid getting into a difficult situation, so you sit back and wait for things to calm down.
If you do this, you risk the chance of becoming stagnant. There will never be a perfect, easy time to get up and get going, so sitting and waiting for one will cause you to get discouraged, lose motivation, or even become depressed.
Challenge yourself in those difficult situations. They may be hard, but find a way to push through them. Not only will this get your results faster, you’ll start to gain confidence in your ability to handle these situations too.
7. Don’t Be Afraid to Fail
You’re going to fail, let’s just get that out of the way. But don’t be afraid to fail. Everyone fails at some point, and it is just an opportunity for you to examine the situation, learn from it, and come back stronger.
If you’re constantly worried about failing, you’ll never be able to put your best effort into anything.
8. Don’t Let Other People Bother You
Another common pressure that holds people back from life success is worrying about what other people will think of them.
Here’s one of the best tips for how to succeed in life: give yourself permission to not care what other people think.
You have to take care of you first before you can think about other people. This sounds selfish, but it isn’t. The more you take care of yourself, pursue the things you like, and build your own confidence, the freer you are to interact with other people.
You can only build strong relationships with other people if you are already confident with yourself.
9. Believe in Yourself
You won’t ever figure out how to succeed in life if you don’t believe in yourself.
If you can imagine your goal, you can get there. It will take a lot of hard work, you will fail a few times, and you’ll want to give up at least once along the way, but if you believe in yourself, you’ll make it.
Never Forget How to Succeed in Life
Always keep these strategies about how to succeed in life in your mind. When you’re struggling, use whichever ones will help you get through it. No goal is out of your reach if you stay committed and confident.
