How can I go to the gym if I’m too uncomfortable in my body to be working out around anyone else? How can I approach that cute guy/girl that doesn’t even notice me? These are just some thoughts that people with self confidence issues struggle with everyday.

Self confidence exercises consist of pushing the limits of your fears and boundaries. They involve stepping outside of your comfort zone, bringing light to your flaws (and accepting them), and creating a positive image of yourself in your head.

Yes, it is scary, and terrifying, and difficult. But it is so important to your overall happiness and well-being.

See, a self confidence exercise is simply changing your mindset and the way that you do things in order to create the confidence you’re lacking. 

Negative thoughts and beliefs will inevitably hold you back in life.

The only thing that can truly change you and create the self confidence that you need to flourish is you. Yes, you are the one responsible for how you feel, and while it’s easy to say that you can change something, it’s a lot more difficult to actually go through with it.

One example of self confidence exercises would be standing in front of a mirror in the morning, looking at every part of you that you love (or don’t so much love) and saying out loud to yourself, “I am beautiful. I am enough.” 

Sounds simple, right? 

On the contrary, it is so difficult for many woman and men to look at themselves face-to-face and say, even in their head, that they look great, feel great, or are great. It’s even harder to say it out loud — and mean it. 

How Can I Use the Exercises to Improve My Quality of Life?

As I’ve said before, it is imperative to have self confidence in order to achieve a happy, healthy, and full life. And who doesn’t want that? 

Try some of these five recommended self confidence exercises:

1. Write positive affirmations on sticky notes and leave them where you will see them.

This is one of the easiest, and also one of the most powerful, self confidence exercises. 

Just in case you don’t already know, a positive affirmation is a statement that brings light to your strengths and makes you feel amazing. For example, you can write a reminder to yourself that says “I can achieve anything that I set my mind to.”

You can put the notes on your bathroom mirror, in your bedroom, on the fridge, in your car, or anywhere that you will be able to see them constantly. Read them when you see them, and even try to say them out loud. 

Such an easy task can lead to feeling ultimately more confident and happier. It can also help you create that success that you are trying to achieve. 

Got an interview for your dream job? Write a note to yourself with words like, “You got this!” or, “I am the perfect candidate for this job and I am going to totally ace this interview!” 

It is proven that saying positive statements in your head or aloud to yourself will manifest that feeling in real life. Remember though, this goes both ways, so saying negative things about yourself will cause further damage.

2. Take time in the morning to groom yourself and dress for success.

In a lot of cases, people with low self esteem will tend to take less care of their looks. If you have an overwhelming sense of helplessness, you might feel like spending your morning putting on a nicer outfit or doing up your hair is a waste of time. 

This is not the case. In fact, dressing the part will make you feel more confident. Have you ever heard the saying, “Dress for the job you want, not the job you have?” 

Dressing the part is going to make you feel like you are worthy of attention being drawn to you. It will manifest confidence in you that you didn’t even know that you had.

So wake up a littler earlier, don’t hit snooze, and dress for success! Even if the occasion doesn’t necessarily call for a more fancy attire, you should still make sure to put some extra effort into your get-ready-routine. It will make a huge difference.

3. Kill negative thoughts by replacing them with good ones.

This is one of those self confidence exercises that are a little easier said than done. However, it is also one of the most important.

As mentioned earlier, your thoughts directly affect your attitude, and negative thoughts will manifest negativity in your life and vice versa. 

Whenever you are feeling doubtful of yourself, or you are having negative thoughts, immediately replace them with something positive. 

It doesn’t have to be a complicated process, but it will instantly improve your attitude and your self confidence. 

You don’t have to search for some extravagant statement either. Simply saying something like “I like how I woke up on time this morning,” or “I’m proud of making it through the day without dropping anything,” will do the trick. 

Small victories are still victories, and you can easily improve your mood and self esteem by celebrating these victories in place of negativity. 

It takes a real mental shift to improve your self esteem, so make sure that you are working toward that shift constantly.  

4. Eat healthily and get proper exercise.

A good diet and exercise don’t just affect your physical health. They affect your mental health as well. 

Science has shown that many foods contain high levels of serotonin, which is the chemical that your body produces to create happiness.

Some examples of foods that contain high levels of serotonin include:

  • Eggs and cheese, which are high in fats and protein
  • Turkey, which is high in tryptophan
  • Nuts and seeds, which are also high in tryptophan

Exercising is also crucially important. Getting up and getting your body moving will increase your levels of serotonin and also help you to feel confident.

5. Celebrate your success.

The last of these self confidence exercises has to do with being proud of yourself. All too often, people don’t give themselves enough credit. 

Bringing in positive thoughts and feeling proud of what you do will break the barrier of low self esteem. 

When you get an answer right on Jeopardy before they announce it, give yourself a high-five. If you make a complicated recipe that turns out better than you expected, give yourself a pat on the back.

Let yourself know that even small accomplishments are worth smiling about. 

You are a unique and you have many reasons to love yourself.
